Rebuild the launchservices database Nov 15, '07 It happens now and then that when you control-click on a file to use the Open With contextual menu, you'll see double entries, and even removed applications, in the list of available applicatiopns. Hello Howard! Thank you for your work on this problem. I reran the command, this time with —seed. I rebooted this sounds all a bit windows to me , and, at this point I find that if I quit an app and restart it, the application icon reappears. I would not advise anyone else to get into this mess because my attempts to solve this problem have been voodoo compared to the normal approach I like to apply to computing, especially system commands, which is to understand a command before running it!

As I wrote, LaunchServices problems are not easy to solve. I hope that this all settles OK for you now. It has already surprised me. Hello again Howard! May I ask a question? All the apps in my dock have icons except terminal — the one I use most! Can you shed any further light on cause and effect here? When you open an app or a document, LaunchServices specifically lsd should get notified. In the case of a document, LaunchServices has to check the type of the document, look up its default associated editor app, open that app and tell it to open the document.

In the case of just opening an app alone, it should tell the app to open in its default configuration. So it should then ensure its details are refreshed. See how things go over the next day or so. I still have missing application icons. I can confirm that at this point all icons have returned.

Hoakley, I used the terminal commands for correcting Launching Services database that you provided. I ran all of them, maybe overkill. I have read this may revert, so I will keep watching. Keeping the terminal commands too. Thank you very much for helping relieve my frustration.

Hoakley, after terminal commands to clear the launch services, the pdf opened from inside Books in my editing application, but failed afterwards.
